Anthropic Files for IPO as Co-Founder Says High AI Training Costs Demand Public Markets
Anthropic has confidentially filed for an initial public offering, co-founder and president Daniela Amodei said on June 4, framing the move as a necessity given the extreme capital requirements of developing artificial intelligence models. Speaking at the Bloomberg Tech Conference in San Francisco, Amodei stated, “Training AI models is a highly capital-intensive business, and public markets are very well suited for that.” The maker of the Claude AI assistant has jumped ahead of rival OpenAI in the IPO queue, with both companies targeting a public listing as soon as this fall. Amodei declined to comment on whether Anthropic views the timing as a competitive race with OpenAI, noting only that the confidential filing allows the company to go public after SEC review. Anthropic submitted its draft registration document days ago, Amodei confirmed, without providing further details.
