EdgeConneX plans $3.5 billion investment in Italian data centers by 2031

EdgeConneX plans to invest about 3 billion euros ($3.5 billion) to build three data center campuses in Italy’s Lombardy region by 2031, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office said May 14, 2026. The projects are expected to provide more than 300 megawatts of capacity and generate an additional 5 billion euros in indirect investment, the government said. The statement clarified the investment amount after Industry Minister Adolfo Urso earlier referred to a 6 billion euro investment. The investment adds to Europe’s expanding data center buildout as demand rises for cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The government used an exchange rate of $1 to 0.8568 euros.
