Erewhon Sued by Hackman Capital for Over $275,000 in Unpaid Rent at Culver City Outpost

Erewhon is being sued by landlord Hackman Capital Partners for more than $275,000 in unpaid rent and legal fees at its Culver City location, according to a breach-of-lease complaint filed in Superior Court. The trendy grocery chain has fallen behind on payments for its anchor space at the Culver Steps retail complex. Monthly rent is $85,000, with additional charges for property maintenance and taxes likely pushing the total above $100,000. Retail real estate consultant David Greensfelder estimated the store would need to exceed $1 million in weekly sales to cover that cost, saying, “Erewhon could be doing fabulously and still not be doing $1 million in sales a week,” suggesting the location may be underperforming. This suit follows similar litigation by Erewhon against its Studio City landlord, where it also disputed rent. Meanwhile, the grocer this month opened a new Glendale store on a property it acquired and redeveloped in 2024, a move that contrasts with its costly lease obligations.
