Focused Energy Raises $240M Series A to Develop Laser-Powered Fusion Reactor

Focused Energy, a German fusion startup, raised $240 million in an oversubscribed Series A round announced in late May 2026, boosting total private capital to $300 million. The company has also secured $200 million in grants, making it one of the most heavily funded fusion ventures. The funding, led by utility RWE with participation from Germany’s SPRIND, Prime Movers Lab, and the European Innovation Council Fund, will advance its inertial confinement fusion technology. Focused Energy uses a “direct drive” approach where lasers compress fuel pellets directly, bypassing the gold hohlraum required by the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The company aims to build a demonstration system, Lighthouse, at a decommissioned RWE nuclear plant in Germany. The fusion sector has drawn significant investor interest in 2026. Thea Energy raised $100 million, Inertia Enterprises secured a $450 million Series A, and Type One Energy is raising a $250 million Series B. Focused Energy’s design, shaped by former NIF strategist Debbie Callahan, targets 10 laser shots per second to achieve commercial viability.
