Galeries Lafayette Closes Beijing Store After 13 Years, Shifts to Curated Brand Strategy

Galeries Lafayette closed its Beijing department store on May 27, 2026, ending a 13-year run in the Chinese capital, though the French luxury retailer said it is not permanently exiting the market. The company will instead focus on a narrower selection of brands that better align with shifting Chinese consumer preferences. The move reflects a broader pivot as luxury retailers adapt to more discerning local shoppers. The Beijing store, opened in 2013, struggled to maintain foot traffic and sales momentum as post-pandemic spending patterns shifted toward experiential and niche luxury. Galeries Lafayette did not disclose financial terms or the number of affected employees. The group continues to operate its Shanghai location, which has outperformed, and said the Beijing closure will allow it to “concentrate resources on high-potential formats.” The decision comes as global department stores recalibrate in China amid fierce e-commerce competition and a slowing luxury market.
