India Surpasses 100M Weekly ChatGPT Users; Altman At India AI Impact Summit

India now exceeds 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, making it OpenAI’s second-largest market behind the United States, CEO Sam Altman said in an article published Sunday in the Times of India ahead of the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, running Monday–Friday, February 15–19, 2026. As of October 2025, ChatGPT reached 800 million weekly active users and is approaching 900 million. OpenAI opened a New Delhi office in August 2025, rolled out a sub-$5 Go tier, and later offered free access for a year in India. Altman attributed India’s strong adoption to a young population and a billion internet users, with students driving growth. Altman noted India has the largest number of student users globally and warned uneven access could limit AI’s economic benefits. He said OpenAI will announce new partnerships in the coming weeks to expand AI access and practical use in India.
