Island Pharmaceuticals (ASX: ILA) Secures FDA Orphan Drug Designation for Galidesivir

Island Pharmaceuticals (ASX: ILA) announced on June 17, 2026, that its antiviral drug, Galidesivir, received Orphan Drug Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of Marburg virus disease. This designation aims to facilitate the development of therapies for rare diseases affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the U.S. The Orphan Drug Designation provides significant incentives for Island Pharmaceuticals, including a seven-year period of market exclusivity upon drug approval, tax credits for qualified clinical research expenses, and waivers for FDA user fees. Galidesivir is a broad-spectrum antiviral nucleoside analog. Marburg virus disease is a severe and often fatal hemorrhagic fever with a high mortality rate, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments. The FDA's recognition highlights the urgent need for effective therapies against this life-threatening pathogen.
