Elon Musk said his tunnel venture The Boring Company plans an intercity tunnel in Texas connecting Austin and San Antonio, cutting travel time between the two cities from 2.5 hours to under 30 minutes, according to a post on X dated September 21, 2026. Musk described the project as a precursor to his long-discussed Hyperloop concept, with speeds exceeding 200 mph (321.87 km/h). The proposal follows years of unfulfilled Boring Company announcements for tunnels in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. Founded in 2016 after Musk said he was stuck in Los Angeles traffic, the company initially aimed to build electric pods traveling at roughly 600 mph between cities.
