Aldi Unveils £900M UK Expansion, Targets 1,500 Stores
Aldi will invest £900 million in new UK stores and distribution centers next year, the German discounter announced on September 28, 2026, intensifying pressure on Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda. The plan includes roughly 40 new stores in 2027, with about 30 opening within 10 weeks in Dumbarton, Newport and Willesden. Aldi, which holds a 10.6% UK market share, aims to grow from 1,092 branches to 1,500. The investment follows £340 million in price cuts this year across more than 1,000 products. Aldi reported record revenue of £19 billion last year, up 5%, with pretax profit broadly flat at £400 million. Chief executive Giles Hurley criticized supermarket loyalty schemes, saying discounts built on inflated base prices fail to help shoppers, in a jab at Tesco's Clubcard.
