Photon Raises $4.5M Seed to Replace Mobile Apps With Messaging Agents
Photon, an AI startup building agents that operate over iMessage and WhatsApp, raised $4.5 million in seed funding co-led by Gradient and A* to expand its developer platform. The round included participation from Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows and Llama Ventures. The company said it has signed up more than 40,000 developers and grew revenue 10-fold over four months, with messaging volume up 5x in the past month alone. Its hosted product, launched in April, offers 99.95% uptime and is SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA-compliant. Photon's tools, including a unified API and command-line interface, let developers build agents across iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, RCS, email and voice. Clients include Corgi Insurance, Rho, Ditto and Boardy. Co-founder and CEO Daniel Tian said the shift from apps to agents is "directionally inevitable." The startup held a Sept. 17 "app funeral" in San Francisco to mark the thesis.
