Ikea to Close Three Small-Format Plan and Order Stores in U.S. by November 30
Ikea U.S. confirmed it will close three small-format "plan and order with pickup" locations in the coming weeks, retreating from a store format it expanded in recent years. The Georgetown, Washington, D.C. store closes October 18, 2026; Annapolis, Maryland, on October 30; and Fairfax, Virginia, on November 30. Affected workers will be offered relocation to nearby stores in Baltimore, College Park, Maryland, and Woodbridge, Virginia. The company said the closures support its "strategy to build a more affordable, accessible, and sustainable future," and that it will continue investing in home delivery, pickup services and digital channels. The Georgetown location opened less than a year ago, replacing a shuttered plan and order store in Arlington, Virginia. The move contrasts with Ikea's 2023 pledge to invest $2.2 billion over three years, which included nine plan and order locations. In February, Ikea outlined plans to open 10 more stores in 2026, including its first in Oklahoma and first city-center location in Los Angeles.
