OpenAI brings Codex to ChatGPT mobile apps to expand AI coding reach
OpenAI said on May 14, 2026, it integrated its Codex coding tool into the ChatGPT mobile app, expanding access as competition intensifies with Anthropic’s Claude Code and other AI programming products. The update positions smartphones as a remote control center for coding agents rather than a primary coding screen. Developers can use ChatGPT on iOS and Android to connect to Codex sandbox environments running in the cloud or on macOS desktops, monitor code diffs, view test screenshots and terminal feedback, issue voice or text instructions, approve higher-risk terminal commands and push GitHub pull requests. OpenAI also added support for iOS Live Activities, allowing users to track background refactoring and testing progress from the lock screen. Codex was first introduced in May 2025, followed by a standalone macOS app in February 2026. The mobile version is available in preview on iOS and Android, with macOS support now available and Windows support expected soon.
