OpenAI partners with Plaid to add personalized finance guidance to ChatGPT users

OpenAI is partnering with Plaid Inc. to let ChatGPT users receive personalized financial guidance based on bank and fintech data they choose to share, Bloomberg reported May 15, 2026. The move could expand ChatGPT beyond generic budgeting tips into account-specific recommendations, such as which credit card balance to pay down first. OpenAI said more than 200 million users have used ChatGPT for budgeting, investment questions and other finance-related queries. The company said ChatGPT is not a replacement for professional financial advice. Plaid CEO Zach Perret said the partnership is intended to improve consumers’ understanding of financial products. ChatGPT’s account access will initially be read-only, OpenAI product lead Ty Geri said, meaning users must still move money or execute transactions themselves. Some assets, including home equity, may not be captured through linked accounts.
