Poland adopts crypto rules as Zondacrypto fraud probe widens

Polish lawmakers adopted a cryptocurrency regulation bill on May 15, 2026, implementing the European Union’s MiCA framework as prosecutors investigate alleged fraud at Zondacrypto, the country’s largest crypto exchange. Prosecutors say thousands of Zondacrypto users have been unable to withdraw funds, with losses exceeding 350 million zlotys, or about $95.9 million. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has alleged Russian-linked money was involved in the exchange, citing Polish security services, and said the case raises concerns over foreign political interference. Poland must implement MiCA rules by July 2026 or domestic entities risk losing the ability to provide crypto-asset services, according to the country’s financial watchdog. President Karol Nawrocki, backed by the nationalist opposition, previously vetoed two government attempts to pass similar legislation, arguing the rules would overburden crypto firms. He could still block the latest bill.
