Portrait Bank Opens in Central Florida as Region's First De Novo in Nearly a Decade
Portrait Bank, central Florida's first de novo bank in nearly a decade, opened Saturday, September 19, 2026, after securing final approval from the Florida Office of Financial Regulation. The bank raised $43 million from 256 local investors, exceeding the roughly $28 million regulators required in initial capital. A group led by banking veteran Erik Weiner filed applications with state regulators and the FDIC just over a year ago and received conditional approvals in April. No single investor contributed more than $1 million, which CEO Weiner described as a diversified funding effort. Portrait targets small to mid-size businesses, individuals and private wealth clients in a market where four banks serve most customers and consolidation has reduced headquartered institutions from 38 in 2000 to about six. Orlando's population grew 1.3% in 2025, above Florida's 0.8% rate.
