SoftBank (9984.T) posts $12.05 billion quarterly profit as OpenAI stake lifts Vision Fund
SoftBank Group reported a net profit of 1.9 trillion yen, or $12.05 billion, for the January-March quarter on May 13, 2026, as gains tied to its OpenAI investment drove a fifth straight profitable quarter. The result compared with net profit of 517 billion yen a year earlier. SoftBank’s Vision Fund unit, which holds the company’s OpenAI stake, booked an investment gain of 3.1 trillion yen in the quarter. OpenAI’s rising valuation across multiple funding rounds over the past year has been the main driver of SoftBank’s performance. The company has pledged an additional $30 billion to OpenAI in 2026, which would bring its total committed investment to $64.4 billion for about a 13% stake. SoftBank has funded its investments by selling stakes including T-Mobile and Nvidia, issuing bonds and taking loans backed by holdings in Arm and SoftBank Corp. The results used an exchange rate of 157.73 yen per dollar.
