SpaceX Wins $2.29 Billion U.S. Space Force Contract for Military Data Network
The U.S. Space Force awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion fixed-price contract on May 26, 2026, to build the backbone of a secure, high-speed military satellite communications network linking global sensors and weapon platforms. The Space Data Network Backbone (SDN Backbone) will provide resilient, high-capacity, low-latency data transmission. SpaceX must deliver a fully operational prototype by the end of 2027. The network is designed to enable near-real-time data transfer between missile warning and tracking sensors and interceptor systems, a key foundation for the Pentagon's Golden Dome missile defense initiative. The system will use a proliferated low-Earth orbit satellite architecture and operate alongside the Space Development Agency's Transport Layer. The Space Force plans to select additional contractors for satellite manufacturing and other network components in summer 2026.
