SpaceX Wins $2.29 Billion U.S. Space Force Contract for Military Satellite Network
The U.S. Space Force awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion fixed-price contract on May 26, 2026, to develop a secure, high-speed satellite communications network connecting military sensors and weapons platforms globally. The Space Data Network (SDN) Backbone will provide high-capacity, low-latency data transport, with a fully operational prototype required by the end of 2027. The proliferated low Earth orbit (pLEO) constellation is designed to integrate missile warning and tracking sensors with interceptors in near real-time, forming a foundation for the Trump administration's Golden Dome missile defense initiative. It will mesh with the Space Development Agency's Transport Layer to create a unified data transport architecture for Defense Department missions. The Space Force said it plans to identify additional contractors for satellite construction and other network elements over the summer. SpaceX's award underscores the Pentagon's reliance on commercial innovation for critical military communications infrastructure.
