TikTok Expands Into Hotel Booking, Fintech as Super-App Ambitions Accelerate

TikTok is rapidly building a super-app ecosystem, launching hotel and experience booking in the U.S. and pursuing a fintech license in Brazil to offer payments and lending. The moves mark a decisive push beyond social media into direct competition with Google, Amazon, and financial-tech platforms. In May 2026, TikTok introduced TikTok GO, letting U.S. users discover and book hotels, attractions, and experiences entirely within the app via video and search, bypassing third-party sites. Separately, TikTok applied to Brazil’s central bank for licenses to provide prepaid accounts and operate as a direct credit provider, aiming to embed financial services into its platform. The expansion follows TikTok Shop’s explosive growth. U.S. sales surged 407% in 2024 and another 108% in 2025 to $15.82 billion, capturing 18.2% of U.S. social commerce, according to eMarketer. TikTok has also deepened its search capabilities with maps, hours, reviews, and price ranges, directly challenging Google Search and Maps while adding in-app games and micro-dramas to boost engagement.
