Trump meets Xi in Beijing as U.S.-China trade talks collide with Iran war risks

President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on May 13, 2026, for a 36-hour summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping aimed at stabilizing U.S.-China trade ties as the Iran war adds geopolitical pressure. The leaders are expected to discuss extending an October trade truce that eased tariffs and export controls, including rare earth shipments to the U.S. Reuters reported both sides are weighing tariff relief on about $30 billion of goods each. Trump is also seeking business deals in agriculture, energy and aerospace. The U.S. delegation includes Tesla Inc. (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, Apple Inc. (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook, Boeing Co. (BA) CEO Kelly Ortberg and Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang. Iran, Taiwan arms sales and the case of jailed Hong Kong media executive Jimmy Lai are also expected to be raised.
