Urenco Expands US Uranium Enrichment 50% to Replace Russian Supply

Urenco USA announced a multibillion-dollar expansion on June 2, 2026, to increase enriched uranium output at its Eunice, New Mexico plant by nearly 50%, aiming to fill the gap from Russian imports banned in 2024. The project adds 2.1 million separative work units (SWU) of capacity, with the first of 24 new centrifuge sets operational by 2032, lifting total annual capacity to 6.4 million SWU. The move responds to U.S. ambitions to quadruple nuclear power generation for AI data centers and energy security. Russia supplied about 20% of U.S. uranium demand before the ban, which allows limited waivers through 2028. Urenco’s existing 4.3 million SWU capacity already covers roughly one-third of current U.S. demand, easing near-term shortage risks flagged by the Energy Information Administration.
