Taiwan Busts Nvidia AI Chip Smuggling Ring Funneling Through Japan (NVDA, SMCI)
Taiwanese prosecutors have uncovered a scheme to funnel Nvidia-powered servers to China via Japan, skirting U.S. export curbs. The Keelung District Prosecutors Office announced on May 27, 2026, that three suspects were arrested last week on suspicion of falsifying export documents for servers carrying advanced Nvidia AI chips. Authorities seized roughly 50 Super Micro Computer (SMCI) servers during the raid. At least one shipment had already been exported to Japan and rerouted to Hong Kong—a key transit hub for restricted technology entering China. The detained servers were allegedly slated for the same illicit route, underscoring an expanding gray supply chain that has traditionally flowed through Southeast Asia. Neither Nvidia (NVDA) nor Super Micro face charges. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, in Taiwan, reiterated strict partner compliance mandates and urged Super Micro to bolster internal controls. Super Micro affirmed its compliance framework and called for stronger industry-wide supply-chain oversight. The case marks the first known instance of AI chip smuggling through Japan, putting fresh scrutiny on enforcement gaps as Washington attempts to starve China of cutting-edge semiconductor access.
