Novo Nordisk's Ozempic 2 mg Linked to 6% Lower MACE Risk Versus Lilly's Mounjaro in Real-World Study
Novo Nordisk A/S (NVO) said patients with type 2 diabetes who escalated Ozempic (semaglutide) to 2 mg had a statistically significant 6% lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) than those who switched to Eli Lilly's Mounjaro (tirzepatide), per a real-world analysis presented Sept. 29, 2026, at the EASD annual meeting in Milan. The retrospective COMPETE SWITCH CV analysis used U.S. healthcare claims data from January 2018 through September 2025, covering 636,525 adults on once-weekly semaglutide 1 mg. The cardiovascular cohort comprised 185,705 patients who escalated to 2 mg and 23,104 who switched to tirzepatide at doses up to 15 mg. The adjusted hazard ratio was 1.06 (95% CI 1.04–1.08; P=0.005). Novo cautioned that safety outcomes were not assessed and residual confounding cannot be excluded, so results show association, not causation. NVO closed at $38.71, down 0.23%; pre-market $38.43.
