EU Fuel Costs Hit €270 Million Daily Since Iran War, Diesel Drives 75% of Burden

Higher road fuel prices have cost the European Union an estimated €53 billion since the start of the Iran war, averaging €270 million per day, according to a Transport & Environment report published September 23, 2026. Diesel accounted for €40 billion of the total, or €203 million daily, with petrol adding €67 million per day. The Brussels-based group compared inflation-adjusted costs over the 28 weeks ending September 6, 2026, against the same period a year earlier. EU diesel prices reached a record €2.159 per litre on September 14, the highest in European Commission data since 2005. The crude-to-diesel wholesale spread exceeded $100 a barrel in early September, versus a typical $10-$30 range, as combined Middle East and Russian diesel and gasoil exports fell nearly 75% year-over-year in August. T&E estimates the average EU diesel car driver paid €142 more over the period, while a German long-haul diesel truck incurred roughly €6,000 in extra fuel costs, or €236 weekly.
