U.S. Touts Iran Deal to Reopen Hormuz Strait, Iran Denies Agreement

U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance announced an interim deal with Iran to end conflict, claiming it would benefit American farmers. The tentative agreement, reportedly reached on June 17, 2026, aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit choke point, and permit Iran to resume oil sales for a 60-day negotiation period. Iran has denied reaching such an agreement. The U.S. administration stated the memorandum of understanding also includes unfreezing Iranian assets. The Strait of Hormuz historically facilitated approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and natural gas shipments.
