Investor Michael Burry warned on Sept. 21, 2026, that five hyperscalers — Amazon (AMZN), Meta (META), Alphabet (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT) and Oracle (ORCL) — have accumulated more than $3 trillion in off-balance-sheet commitments tied to AI infrastructure, risks he said the market may be underestimating. Burry cited roughly $1.2 trillion in unstarted lease obligations and over $1.5 trillion in purchase commitments; including special purpose vehicles, guarantees and contingent support, the total exceeds $3 trillion. Morgan Stanley has put undiscounted hyperscaler commitments above $2.7 trillion, about three years of operating cash flow, rising past $3.1 trillion when Nvidia and Broadcom are included. He flagged a mismatch between data center timelines — 3 to 5 years to build, with leases of 13 to 20 years — and AI chip cycles of 12 to 18 months, plus over $400 billion in construction-in-progress assets not yet depreciating, and singled out Oracle’s valuation. The IMF has estimated cumulative AI capex by hyperscalers could reach $3.4 trillion by 2029.
