US equities closed modestly lower on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, as long-dated Treasury yields climbed to multi-decade highs. The 30-year bond yield reached 5.6206%, its highest since June 2002, while the 10-year note hit 5.293%, the highest since June 2007. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 131.59 points, or 0.26%, to 51,349.92. The S&P 500 lost 12.85 points, or 0.17%, to 7,670.84, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 22.84 points, or 0.08%, to 26,797.54. Stocks pared deeper declines after New York Fed President John Williams said the central bank has time to assess data before its next move. CME FedWatch put October rate-hike odds at 51.5%, down from nearly 70% earlier. Consumer confidence fell to a nearly 12.5-year low in September, and August job openings declined by 256,000 to 7.079 million. Investors await Wednesday's PCE inflation report.
