Vinod Khosla, an early OpenAI investor and founder of Khosla Ventures, warned that robotics startup valuations are overheated and predicted more than half will trade below current levels by 2030, signaling a broad industry shakeout. "I think by 2030, more than half of the companies will be valued lower than they are today," Khosla said. Companies that avoid markdowns, he added, will command extremely high multiples. Khosla Ventures has backed robotics startups including Rhoda AI, which trains robot foundation models, and Aim, which builds autonomous earthmoving equipment. Khosla said a robotics "ChatGPT moment" is likely within two years, producing a small group of dominant humanoid robot leaders. He ranked OpenAI, DeepMind and Anthropic as the most likely candidates, and said Anthropic entered robotics too late. He also noted Meta is developing home robots. Khosla cautioned that leading AI firms' efforts to slow model development for safety work could delay robotics progress, with national security becoming a key factor if AI models can power military robots. He said inflated valuations now extend beyond robotics, describing monthly funding rounds as "crazy."
