Bull CEO Says Memory, Not Processors, Is Europe's Supercomputing Supply Chain Gap
Europe can now source roughly 70% of supercomputer components locally, up from 20%-30% five years ago, but memory remains the last major component without a European supplier, Bull CEO Emmanuel Le Roux said on October 2, 2026. Speaking at the company's Angers factory, Le Roux cited progress on European processors including SiPearl, Vsora and Openchip, but said "the problem is memory... We don't see anything coming." Processors account for only 10-20% of a supercomputer's value. Memory prices have risen sharply and are now among the industry's biggest concerns, he said. European memory initiatives exist but would take years to build. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron produce over 90% of global memory supply, which supercomputers require in vast quantities.
