Google, Georgia Power Agree on Nuclear Uprates Adding 96 MW to Grid

Georgia Power and Google have reached an agreement to expand output at two Georgia nuclear stations, with Google subscribing to power from uprates at the Vogtle and Hatch plants that could add roughly 96 megawatts of generating capacity. The deal requires approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission. Google would participate through a newly proposed Nuclear Uprate tariff and receive zero-emission credits for the carbon-free attributes of the incremental nuclear capacity. Georgia Power projects about $900 million in customer benefits over the operating lives of the units and said the structure would shield non-participating customers from upgrade costs. The utility has also asked regulators to approve an extended power uprate for Hatch Units 1 and 2; Vogtle Units 1 and 2 uprates were previously approved in its 2025 Integrated Resource Plan. Nuclear supplied more than one-quarter of Georgia's electricity last year. Georgia Power, a Southern Company subsidiary, serves about 2.8 million customers.
