European Stocks Close Lower as Late Selling Erases Gains; Stoxx 600 Down 0.09%

European markets reversed early gains and settled mostly lower on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, pressured by last-hour selling amid persistent uncertainty over U.S.-Iran conflict resolution. The pan-European Stoxx 600 fell 0.09%. The UK's FTSE 100 dropped 0.45% and France's CAC 40 lost 0.53%, while Germany's DAX edged up 0.1%. Switzerland's SMI declined 0.22%. Energy stocks slid as Brent crude retreated to around $103 a barrel after hitting $107.87 earlier. BP fell 2.3% and Shell 1.7%. Tech shares outperformed on AI-driven chip demand hopes. Infineon rose 4.8% and Siemens Energy 3.5%. In France, Legrand surged over 6% after raising 2030 targets. Fresenius dropped nearly 5%; Fresenius Medical Care fell 3.1% after Berenberg withdrew its buy rating. UK shop price inflation eased to 1.4% in September from 1.5% in August, the British Retail Consortium reported.
