US Stocks Hold Near Records as Oil Eases; Nasdaq Notches New High, Dow Slips

The S&P 500 closed essentially flat on September 22, 2026, slipping less than 0.1% to 7,764.64 and sitting just 0.4% below its record high set last month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.4% to 51,863.69, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.5% to a fresh record of 27,244.28. The Russell 2000 added 0.5% to 2,889.92. Stocks had traded higher in the morning after Brent crude briefly fell below $98 a barrel, but oil pared losses to settle at $99.25. Treasury yields held relatively steady, as did global equity indexes. For the week, the S&P 500 is up 1.5%, the Dow 0.4%, the Nasdaq 2.7% and the Russell 2000 1%. Year to date, the S&P 500 has gained 13.4%, the Dow 7.9%, the Nasdaq 17.2% and the Russell 2000 16.4%.
