Tesla CEO Musk Raises AI5 Chip Memory to 96GB, Claims Performance Beats Nvidia at 10% Cost
Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk said the company will equip its AI5 chip with 96GB of memory, up from an earlier 72GB plan, after reducing capacity to secure supply amid a record global memory shortage. Musk said on X that Tesla had halved AI5 memory to 72GB LPDDR5 and cut AI6 to 144GB LP6 to ensure stable supply, then raised AI5 slightly so Tesla would not be the only user of the lowest-spec LPDDR5 tier. The AI5 chip taped out in April and will support the Optimus humanoid robot. Musk claimed a single AI5 delivers performance comparable to Nvidia's (NVDA) Hopper AI GPUs, with dual-chip configurations matching Blackwell-class GPUs and three times Nvidia's performance per watt. He previously said AI5's total cost is about 10% of Nvidia's.
