Tesla (TSLA) wins Belgian approval to test supervised self-driving software
Tesla has been authorized to test its supervised self-driving software on one vehicle in Belgium’s Flanders region, a spokesperson for regional minister Annick De Ridder said May 13, 2026. The approval could allow testing to begin as soon as Tesla obtains a license plate and insurance, potentially on May 13 or May 15. The authorization would apply across Belgium. De Ridder said the vehicle will be tested over about 5,000 kilometers to assess differences with Dutch road infrastructure and traffic rules. If results are positive, Belgium could move toward provisional European type approval. The decision follows provisional approval by the Dutch regulator in April 2026, making the Netherlands the first EU country to allow the software, which can control a vehicle but requires driver supervision.
