Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s (2330.TW) American depositary receipts (TSM) traded at their smallest premium to Taipei shares in two years during May 2026, as local investors poured into the stock on AI optimism. The ADR premium averaged 13.7% in May, down from 26% in December 2025, Bloomberg data showed. Taipei-listed shares surged more than 50% year-to-date through May, outperforming the ADR's sub-40% gain. The shift was fueled by regulatory easing that allowed domestic equity funds to increase Taiwan allocations and a retail frenzy into AI-linked stocks. "The Taiwan market has reached extreme optimism on the AI cycle, far exceeding the U.S.," said Vincent Fernando, executive director at Zero One Research. "There's far less concern about an AI bubble in Taiwan." The narrowing premium signals that local investors are increasingly driving TSMC's valuation, reversing a long-held trend where the ADR commanded a higher multiple due to easier foreign access and index inclusion.
