A United Airlines flight bound for Spain returned to Newark Liberty International Airport on June 1, 2026, after a Bluetooth device name containing a sensitive word triggered an onboard security alert. Flight UA103, a Boeing 757, departed Newark at approximately 8 p.m. local time and was over the Atlantic Ocean when the crew decided to turn back, landing safely without injuries. The device, discovered after a passenger’s phone displayed a Bluetooth connection named “airplane hijack,” prompted the captain to declare a security situation. United Airlines said in a statement that the crew followed standard procedures and that the passenger was questioned by authorities upon landing and later released without charges. No actual threat was found. United’s operations faced a brief disruption: the return delayed the flight’s arrival in Barcelona by about five hours, and the aircraft was cleared to resume service shortly after. Shares of United Airlines Holdings (UAL) were little changed in after-hours trading.
