Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare granted orphan drug designation to Vanda Pharmaceuticals’ imsidolimab for the treatment of generalized pustular psoriasis on May 28, 2026. The designation provides incentives including priority review, reduced regulatory fees, and 10 years of market exclusivity upon approval. Imsidolimab is an anti-IL-36 receptor monoclonal antibody targeting a rare, severe form of psoriasis. Vanda (NASDAQ: VNDA) stated the designation validates the therapy’s potential for patients who currently have limited treatment options. Generalized pustular psoriasis can cause life-threatening flares and often lacks effective long-term management. The Japanese decision comes ahead of a planned regulatory submission in the country, with global development efforts ongoing. No financial terms were disclosed.
