United Steelworkers Cite Stalled Contract Talks With US Steel Ahead of Sept. 25 Deadline

The United Steelworkers said contract negotiations with US Steel have yielded little progress on healthcare, job protection and wages, accusing the Nippon Steel-owned producer of stalling tactics ahead of a Sept. 25 bargaining deadline, according to a Sunday text message to members. The union said US Steel has not moved from its July wage proposal and continues seeking to shift more healthcare costs onto employees, calling the company's latest response "extremely disappointing." The two sides agreed last month to extend their existing labor agreement beyond its Sept. 1 expiration while talks continue. Nippon Steel completed its roughly $14.9 billion acquisition of Pittsburgh-based US Steel in June 2025, making it a wholly owned subsidiary, and has said it plans to invest $11 billion in US Steel by the end of 2028. US Steel did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
