Apple (AAPL) is expected to announce its first touchscreen MacBook on Wednesday at a media event in Los Angeles, abandoning years of resistance to touch-enabled laptops ahead of the key holiday shopping season, according to reports. The event, dubbed "Pro and tell," is scheduled for 1 a.m. Taipei time Thursday. The product is expected to be disclosed via a website press release, and the actual launch timing may not coincide with the event. Co-founder Steve Jobs called touchscreen laptops "terrible" ergonomically in 2010, and former CEO Tim Cook likened such devices to combining a toaster and a refrigerator in 2012. Apple this week announced an entry-level MacBook Pro with its new M6 chip. Bloomberg reported the touchscreen model will use existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, offering no significant performance gain over current machines with the same silicon — a potential issue as buyers increasingly prioritize on-device AI processing.
