Apple Launches First Touchscreen MacBook Pro With OLED, Dynamic Island; Top Configuration Reaches $14,549
Apple (AAPL) unveiled its first MacBook Pro with a touchscreen, breaking with nearly two decades of resistance to touch-enabled Macs and adding OLED displays and Dynamic Island to the Mac line for the first time. The 14-inch and 16-inch models start at $2,899 and $3,399, respectively; a maxed-out 16-inch configuration with 16TB storage and 128GB memory is priced at $14,549. The new laptops run on M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The launch comes as the global PC market contracts: IDC data show third-quarter worldwide PC shipments fell 20% year over year, with Apple's shipments also declining but by less than the overall market. Apple shares closed down 9.4% on Wednesday (28th). The reversal on touchscreens follows a shift by former CEO Tim Cook and current CEO John Ternus about four years ago, according to Bloomberg. Apple also released an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip, an updated iMac and an OLED iPad mini this week, and the iPhone Duo went on sale Friday (23rd).
