Apple (AAPL-US) on Wednesday introduced its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, reversing nearly two decades of opposition to touch-enabled laptops. The new model is also the first Mac with an OLED display, features an interface redesigned for touch, offers M5 Pro and M5 Max chip options, and has a lighter chassis. According to Apple's Taiwan website, the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display starts at NT$97,900. Preorders open Friday at 9 a.m., with sales beginning November 6. CEO Turner said in Los Angeles that Apple is bringing touch to the Mac for the first time. The device still runs macOS. Apple said the OLED screen offers higher brightness, better color and wider viewing angles. Bloomberg reported that Cook and Turner began supporting a touchscreen MacBook Pro about four years ago, aiming to add momentum and revenue through premium features and higher prices. It is Turner's third major product launch since taking office. Apple this week also released entry-level MacBook Pro and iMac models with the M6 chip and an OLED iPad mini; the foldable iPhone "Duo" went on sale last Friday. The launch comes as the laptop market slumps, with full-year shipments forecast to fall 11%. IDC estimates third-quarter global PC shipments fell 20% year over year, with Apple down 11%. Mac revenue in the latest quarter was $10.35 billion, less than 10% of total company revenue.
