Apple's iPhone Duo Fails Durability Test: Dust Ingress, Reverse Bend Breaks Inner Display
Apple's (AAPL) first horizontal foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, failed a full durability test conducted by YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, according to a video published by the tester. The device, marketed with an IP68 dust-resistance rating, is among the few foldables to fall short in the tester's seven years of reviewing such phones. Despite the IP68 claim, dust entered the chassis through multiple gaps around the hinge and penetrated the folding mechanism, disabling the magnets that keep the body closed and disrupting normal opening and closing. In a reverse-bending test, the 7.6-inch inner display developed permanent green lines and lost touch response after the frame deformed, leaving the phone unusable. Scratch resistance differed sharply between panels: the outer screen, using second-generation Ceramic Shield, showed visible scratches only at Mohs level 7, while the inner display scratched at level 2. A matte nanotexture coating made fine scratches nearly invisible, even after friction tests with sand, gravel and chainmail. Tester Nelson advised against leaving the unfolded device on a seat to avoid accidental bending.
