Schneider Electric agreed earlier this month to acquire Boston-based industrial software maker PTC for $22.6 billion, its largest-ever acquisition, as power infrastructure firms position for surging AI-driven electricity demand. The deal, which would top Schneider's $11 billion purchase of Aveva in 2023 and mark its third billion-dollar-plus transaction this year, comes as energy grids and transmission lines worldwide remain too small and too old to meet projected data center demand. Rather than pursuing next-generation technologies like nuclear fusion or space-based solar, firms including ABB are focused on utilizing existing assets and excess capacity. "There is an opportunity to utilize existing assets more than we are today," Ruben Llanes, Schneider Electric's CEO of digital grid, told Semafor last week. Elena Boskov-Kovacs, co-founder of Vienna-based Blueprint Energy Solutions, described the European grid challenge to Dutch outlet Enlit as "a mismatch in speed rather than a gap in technology."
