Meta's Muse AI Agent Sparks Debate Over 'Proactive Commerce' Threat to Airbnb, Amazon, Booking
Meta's (META) personal AI agent Muse is prompting investors to reassess the business models of online platforms including Airbnb (ABNB), Booking Holdings (BKNG), Amazon (AMZN), Uber (UBER) and DoorDash (DASH), as AI shifts from answering questions to completing tasks on users' behalf. Independent analyst Mostly Borrowed Ideas said on the podcast "The Synopsis" that after testing Muse he sold his Airbnb position and added to Meta. He said Muse recommended five lodging options using his Airbnb history and Instagram Reels, then found a farmhouse bookable directly for 60% less than the Airbnb price, completing the transaction via Stripe's Link with his confirmation. MBI said roughly 90% of Airbnb's traffic is organic or direct, a margin advantage that could erode over five to 10 years if consumers delegate searches to AI. Booking, which pays Google for about a third of its traffic and spends over $5 billion annually on marketing, may simply shift that cost to AI platforms, while its loyalty program retains over half of room nights. MBI flagged Amazon's roughly $76 billion ad business as vulnerable, since AI agents compare products rather than click top ads. Uber faces earlier pressure than DoorDash, whose roughly 50-cent order profit limits disruption incentives.
