OpenAI Pilots 'Mission Interview' for Candidates, Starting With Marketing and HR Teams
OpenAI has launched a pilot "mission interview" for job candidates, beginning with its marketing and human resources teams, the company told Fortune on Monday, October 6, 2026. The step gives applicants a dedicated space to discuss how they would advance OpenAI's mission to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The interviewer comes from a separate team from the role being filled. OpenAI said there is no "right" answer and that skepticism, disagreement and intellectual diversity are welcome. The company is also building a training program to certify employees to conduct the interviews, though it is only beginning to ramp up. The move reflects OpenAI's push to standardize evaluations as it matures. The company has roughly 8,000 employees worldwide and 830 open roles. Meta, Amazon and Anthropic run similar cultural-fit assessments. OpenAI roles often pay over $300,000, with some engineer offers exceeding $900,000 in total compensation.
