AI Law Firm Crosby Bids for Assets of Weil Gotshal as Firm Moves Toward Dissolution
AI-first law firm Crosby has bid to acquire some assets of Weil, Gotshal & Manges, including its trademark, brand and unspecified internal data, and is separately working to hire some of the firm's 1,200 lawyers, TechCrunch confirmed. Weil Gotshal confirmed to the New York Times this week that it is preparing to vote on dissolution in the coming days. The wind-down follows the refusal of its presumed leadership heir apparent to take the role, the departure of several top-producing lawyers, and the shelving of a hoped-for merger with rival Willkie Farr & Gallagher, the Times reported. Two-year-old Crosby, which operates as an actual law firm using internally developed AI rather than selling the technology, has raised about $85 million, including a $60 million Series B round in March led by Lux and Index, with participation from Sequoia, Elad Gil, 01 Advisors and Bain Capital Ventures. Terms of the bid were not disclosed and there is no guarantee Crosby will prevail.
