Boeing Wins $20B+ Navy F/A-XX Fighter Contract, Second Major Jet Victory After F-47
Boeing has secured the U.S. Navy's next-generation F/A-XX fighter contract, worth more than $20 billion in its initial development phase, defeating Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. The win, confirmed in October 2026, marks Boeing's second major fighter jet victory after capturing the Air Force's F-47 program in 2025. The Pentagon required all competitors to adopt common design standards for easier future upgrades. Boeing's use of digital design tools and close alignment with Pentagon requirements distinguished its bid, according to people familiar with the competition. Northrop Grumman has requested a debriefing and is weighing an appeal. The victories offer Boeing's defense division a chance to recover from years of cost overruns, military aircraft delays and Starliner setbacks. However, analysts caution that financial success depends on contract terms. Boeing has lost $20.5 billion on five fixed-price development programs. CEO Kelly Ortberg has said the company will avoid similar fixed-price contracts. The F-47 is expected to fly in 2028 and enter service in 2029; the F/A-XX is slated for service in the 2030s, eventually replacing the Navy's F/A-18 fleet.
