Bank of America has urged customers to never share their banking username and password with an outside service, "including an AI-enabled tool or agent that offers to act on your behalf," according to an email to customers titled "Protecting your finances in the AI World." The bank cautioned that sharing credentials with an AI assistant risks unauthorized financial activity, account lockouts if the bank flags suspicious access, or credential leaks through a security flaw in the tool that could expose accounts to hackers. It noted that account agreements at most banks hold customers responsible for activity conducted by anyone they give their login to. The warning comes as banks, payment providers and processors are still determining how AI agents fit into finance, reportedly grappling with unauthorized agents accessing customer funds, including in agentic payments that let users deploy autonomous agents to make purchases.
