Bayer won a St. Louis trial on Thursday against three women who claimed its Roundup weedkiller caused their non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a verdict that tested the viability of remaining litigation after a favorable U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Bayer shares rose 4% to a one-month high at 1011 GMT. A St. Louis jury unanimously ruled for Bayer-owned Monsanto in the first case to reach trial since June's Supreme Court decision, which held that federal law requires herbicide makers to use the exact EPA-approved label. Plaintiffs Theresa Aretino, Cynthia Fernandez and Betty Larkin sued in 2020; Larkin died before trial. Bayer is separately seeking to resolve roughly 65,000 remaining claims through a proposed $7.25 billion settlement under review by a Missouri state court judge. The litigation has cost the company billions since its 2018 Monsanto acquisition and weighed on its share price.
