Binance Uncovers Additional Breach Points in $6.3B Hack, Freezes $3B Onchain
Binance said Friday it found "additional points of breach" in Thursday's security incident, which it estimates cost around $6.3 billion, after initially blaming a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop. CEO Richard Teng said the attacker "did not simply use one engineer's permissions," describing a more complex process, and that no individual has been attributed responsibility. Outflows stopped when withdrawals were paused, and the exchange said it remains on track to resume them in 45 hours. About $3 billion of affected assets has been frozen onchain with blockchain partners. Binance said it will cover all losses from its SAFU fund and company funds, adding that "user funds are safe." Deposits were operating normally by Friday morning. Arkham put the haul at $6.01 billion from hot wallets on nine blockchains between 4:10 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. ET Thursday. Tether and Circle froze roughly 975.1 million USDT and 823 million USDC, worth about $1.8 billion. The attacker continues moving funds, sending $38.82 million in Ethereum to a new address early Friday while still holding $1.12 billion in ETH.
